Yeraldin Ramos Helps Students Be Biologists for the Day
As part of my participation in the STEM Ambassador Program, I had the opportunity to design and implement the educational workshop “Biologists for a Day” for elementary students at Dr. Julio J. Henna School. The activity was originally planned for preschool students and focused on explaining the process of decomposition through a science story. However, I was given the opportunity to adapt the activity for older students, which became a positive challenge and a valuable learning experience.
The workshop consisted of short 20-minute presentations per group to maintain students’ attention and active participation. During the activity, students engaged in the observation and dissection of different animals, allowing them to explore biological structures, ask questions, and experience the scientific process in a hands-on and meaningful way. Students responded with enthusiasm, curiosity, and excitement about learning what biologists do and how science relates to their lives.
This experience reinforced the importance of adapting science communication strategies to the age, context, and prior experiences of the audience. It also highlighted the value of providing STEM learning opportunities to communities with limited access to scientific experiences, as these initiatives can inspire interest in science, build confidence, and promote critical thinking from an early age.
As a STEM Ambassador, this project strengthened my skills in leadership, educational planning, and public engagement in science. I learned that interactive and experiential learning approaches can have a powerful impact on students’ motivation and perception of science. In the future, I hope to continue developing outreach activities that foster scientific curiosity and help make science more accessible and inclusive for diverse communities.
